What is reminiscence therapy, and why does it work for dementia?

29 May 2026 · MS Care Team

What is reminiscence therapy?

Reminiscence therapy is a structured way of using memories from a person's past — through music, photos, objects, and conversation — to support cognition, mood, and connection in people living with dementia.

Why does it work for dementia?

In dementia, long-term memories often remain accessible long after short-term memory fades. Reminiscence taps into what's still there. The familiar tune, the family photograph, the smell of a childhood kitchen — these become anchors for identity and conversation.

What does a session look like?

A small group, a cup of tea, a curated set of prompts from the era your loved one grew up in, and a therapist guiding a conversation that flows wherever the group wants to take it. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes.

Is there evidence behind it?

Yes. Reminiscence therapy has been studied for decades and shows consistent benefits for mood, communication, and family relationships in people with mild to moderate dementia.
