A caregiver's guide to choosing a dementia activities programme in Singapore
13 June 2026 · MS Care Team
What is a dementia activities programme?
A dementia activities programme provides structured daytime sessions for people living with dementia, designed to support cognition, engagement, and wellbeing — while giving family caregivers time to rest.
How is it different from traditional day care?
Traditional day care focuses on supervision and basic activities. A dementia-specific activities programme is purpose-built: smaller groups, therapist-led sessions, and evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST).
What should I look for?
- Small group sizes (4–8 is ideal).
- Qualified activity or music therapists leading sessions, not just caregivers supervising.
- A consistent weekly structure — predictability supports both function and confidence.
- A one-to-one orientation before joining a group.
- Open communication with families about progress and observations.
How often should my loved one attend?
Most families start with one activity session per week and build up. Consistency tends to matter more than frequency.
What does it cost in Singapore?
Costs vary widely. Many activity sessions are subsidised through the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC). Ask each provider for their fee structure and any available subsidies up front.
